The Beginnings
1950s-1960s

Edward D’Amato, Sr., a man of entrepreneurial spirit and unyielding work ethic, emerged from humble beginnings as the son of Italian immigrants. With a background in carpentry, military service, and public service, Edward embarked on his journey into business. In the early 1960s, armed with determination and a light blue pickup truck, he founded Edward D’Amato Construction, laying the foundation for what would become a multi-generational family enterprise. The company initially focused on small-scale contracting work, with Edward's wife Patricia and other family members pitching in to meet the demands of a growing clientele.

In 1961, Edward and Patricia D’Amato established Edward D’Amato Construction, marking the formal beginning of their business endeavors. Specializing in small-scale building and emergency response, the company's success relied on Edward's tireless dedication, with Patricia and her mother, Dora Litke, pitching in during late hours. As the decade progressed, the team expanded with hires like Anthony (Tut) D’Amato, who was brought on as a partner, and Jack Bright. By 1967, the company was officially incorporated, welcoming Edward’s brother, Pasquale (Pat) D’Amato, to the management team.

1970s

As the 1970s commenced, D’Amato Construction embarked on a trajectory of diversification and expansion. Recognizing the importance of meeting customer demands, Edward enlisted the expertise of architect John Dziedzic to streamline the "Design-Build" process, offering comprehensive solutions to clients' construction needs. This era marked a pivotal shift towards residential and larger-scale construction projects, positioning D’Amato as a trusted one-stop-shop for its clientele. They quickly expanded their services to include concrete batching and delivery through the acquisition of the Helming Brothers Cement Company. This expansion laid the groundwork for Bristol Ready Mix, a thriving concrete enterprise. Despite challenges, including the decision to close the cement business to concentrate fully on construction, Edward's dedication and strategic vision propelled the company forward.

1980s

The 1980s witnessed a transformation for D’Amato Construction as it transitioned into large-scale building construction and real estate development. Venturing into projects such as strip malls and retail developments across the Greater Bristol, New Britain, and Southington areas, the company thrived under Edward’s leadership and the strategic guidance of John Dziedzic. With Edward’s sons, Edward Jr. and Thomas, joining the ranks, and daughter Susan contributing her expertise in financial management, D’Amato Construction cemented its reputation as an industry leader.

1990s

Throughout the 1990s, D’Amato Construction continued its upward trajectory, establishing a prominent presence in site work and infrastructure projects. Edward Jr., Thomas, and Susan assumed key roles within the company, furthering its expansion into a multitude of construction sectors. With strategic investments in equipment and personnel, the company navigated through a decade of growth and innovation.

2000s

The 2000s heralded a period of significant growth and technological advancement for D’Amato Construction. Expanding its capabilities in demolition and infrastructure, the company embraced emerging technologies and welcomed a new generation of talent into its fold. Despite the passing of Patricia D’Amato, Susan assumed her responsibilities seamlessly, ensuring continuity in financial management. Meanwhile the next generation, represented by Joseph D’Amato, brought new ideas and technical expertise.

2010s

As Ed Sr. passed the torch to the next generation, D’Amato Construction evolved into a premier water resources and infrastructure specialist, catering to the needs of New England’s utilities. With a renewed focus on innovation and specialization, the company established in-house engineering services and expanded its team to include expertise in diverse fields. Edward Jr.’s son, Anthony, and Thomas’s daughter, Darian, brought fresh perspectives to the company, contributing to its continued success.

2020s – Today

In the present decade, D’Amato Construction remains committed to excellence, providing state-of-the-art services in general contracting, design-build, and construction management. Through strategic investments in technology and talent, the company continues to redefine industry standards while upholding its core values of integrity, reliability, and customer service. The company’s identity can be defined as a mid-sized, flatly managed company that stands firm on its commitments and enduring loyalty to its customers. With a multi-generational workforce and a steadfast dedication to its founding principles, D’Amato Construction stands poised for continued success in the ever-evolving construction landscape.
